When testing the game for the first time on an LG CX screen, HDR looked much better than SDR. But back then, it was hard to tell how well HDR was built into the game, especially when looking at the dark areas (black level floor).

Now, with better tools and more experience, we take a close look at HDR in GTA 5 Enhanced.

Does GTA 5 Enhanced Have HDR on PC?

Starting with the PC version, there is bad news and good news:

• Bad News: GTA 5 on PC still does not have native HDR support.
• Good News: Auto HDR on PC is much better than SDR, and Auto HDR in GTA 5 looks very good.

Important Things to Know About PC Auto HDR

1. Tool Limits: Tools like Lilium’s HDR Analyzer cannot check Auto HDR on PC because Auto HDR games are not 10-bit programs. Auto HDR works in 8-bit mode by changing SDR into HDR. But in this game, it does a very good job.
2. Brightness Limits: Auto HDR on PC or Xbox uses system-level HDR setup. But Auto HDR games will only show up to 1,000 nits of maximum brightness, even on screens that can get much brighter (like an LG G3).

Best PC Brightness Settings

On PC, the only setting in GTA 5 that changes the picture is the brightness setting.

To set it correctly:

1. Turn the brightness setting down to the lowest level.
2. Turn it up between +5 steps and +15 steps.

Why this works:

• Below +5 steps: The picture is too dark, and you lose detail in dark areas.
• Above +15 steps: The picture looks washed out.
• Best Result: Setting it to +10 steps gave great contrast and good brightness (tested on an LG G2). Note: This depends on your screen and what you like.

Does GTA 5 Enhanced Have HDR on PS5 and Xbox Series X?

When testing the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 versions, there is no difference in HDR between PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Console vs PC Differences

• Native Support: The console version supports native HDR, which is a little better than Auto HDR. It gives better colors, but there might be small issues with dark areas.
• No System Setup: GTA 5 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X does not use the console’s system-level HDR setup.
