GTA 6 File Size: How Much Storage Space Will Grand Theft Auto VI Need?

Grand Theft Auto VI is one of the most anticipated games ever, and as we get closer to its release, players have started asking an important question: how much storage space will GTA 6 need?

Before looking at the numbers circulating online, there is one thing that needs to be made completely clear: Rockstar Games has still not officially confirmed the exact GTA 6 file size or installation requirement.

Rockstar has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI is coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026, and digital pre-loading will begin on November 12, but an official number for the game’s required storage space has not been published.

Because of this, any specific number you see online should currently be treated as an estimate, rumor, or unofficial information, rather than the final confirmed GTA 6 file size.

What Is the Expected GTA 6 File Size?

There is currently no official answer to exactly how many GB GTA 6 will require. However, that has not stopped different estimates from appearing online. One of the most widely discussed figures is around 200 GB.

The 200 GB figure has been circulating for years, but it is important to understand where it came from. An unofficial GTA 6-related account reportedly shared a claim in 2024 suggesting that the game could be “just under 200 GB.” This was not an announcement from Rockstar Games, and there is no official Rockstar documentation confirming that number.

So, while 200 GB is possible, there is currently no reliable reason to say that GTA 6 will definitely be 200 GB.

Why Could GTA 6 Be Such a Large Game?

There are several reasons why GTA 6 could require considerably more storage than previous Grand Theft Auto games.

First, GTA 6 is being designed specifically for current-generation consoles. Rockstar is building a huge open-world experience set across the fictional state of Leonida, including the return of Vice City and surrounding areas.A game of this scale requires a large amount of data for its environments, characters, vehicles, animations, sound effects, dialogue, textures and other assets.

Modern games also use increasingly detailed textures and higher-quality audio. As developers create more detailed worlds, the amount of data required to store those assets can increase significantly.Rockstar’s official GTA 6 information describes Leonida as a large setting and introduces a wide range of locations and characters. The game stars Jason and Lucia and is being developed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

GTA 6 Could Be Larger Than GTA 5

Looking at previous Rockstar releases can give us some context, although it cannot tell us the exact GTA 6 size.Grand Theft Auto V has grown substantially over the years because of updates and additional content. Rockstar’s current PC requirements list 105 GB of storage for GTA V Enhanced.Red Dead Redemption 2 is another useful comparison because it is one of Rockstar’s largest games in terms of world size and assets.

GTA 6 is being developed with newer technology and a much more detailed world, so it would not be surprising if its installation size is considerably larger than GTA V.That does not, however, prove that GTA 6 will be 150 GB, 180 GB, 200 GB, or any other specific number.

Until Rockstar provides the official requirement, these numbers should remain estimates.

Is the 200 GB GTA 6 Rumor Real?

The short answer is: it has not been confirmed.

The 200 GB figure has been repeatedly discussed online because of an unofficial claim that appeared in 2024. Some gaming websites have also referenced the claim while discussing possible GTA 6 storage requirements. However, the figure does not come from an official Rockstar Games announcement. This distinction is important.

There is a big difference between saying:“GTA 6 will be 200 GB.”

and:“An unofficial claim suggests GTA 6 could be close to 200 GB.”

The second statement is much more accurate based on the information currently available.

Rockstar has not published an official installation-size figure on its GTA 6 information or pre-order pages.

How Much Free Storage Should You Have?

Even though we do not know the final installation size, having plenty of free storage before GTA 6 launches would be a sensible idea.If the final game is larger than GTA V, players with limited storage could need to free up space before installing it.There is also another important point: the required free space for installation is not necessarily identical to the final size of the installed game.

Games can require additional temporary space during installation, updates or other processes. Therefore, players should avoid planning their storage situation around an unconfirmed number such as exactly 200 GB.

Instead, it is better to wait for Rockstar or the official PlayStation and Xbox store listings to provide the final requirement.

When Will We Know the Official GTA 6 Size?

The exact storage requirement could become clearer closer to launch.Rockstar has already confirmed the release date and pre-loading information. According to Rockstar, digital versions of GTA 6 will be available for pre-loading from November 12, 2026, one week before the game’s November 19 launch.

As the pre-load becomes available, the actual download information should provide a much better indication of how much storage players need.

This is why it is better to wait for official information rather than relying on screenshots, social-media posts or old rumors.

Will GTA 6 Need 200 GB on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S?

At the moment, there is no official confirmation that GTA 6 will require 200 GB on either consolehe game is officially confirmed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, but Rockstar has not provided a final storage figure. The final size could potentially be below 200 GB, around 200 GB, or even above that figure.

Until the official requirement is published, nobody outside Rockstar can confidently give the exact number.

What About GTA 6 Updates?

Another thing players should remember is that the initial installation size may not remain the game’s total storage requirement forever.Rockstar could release patches, improvements and additional content after launch. These updates can increase the amount of storage used by the game over time. This is something players have already experienced with previous large games.

So even if GTA 6 launches at a particular size, the amount of free storage recommended in the future could be different.

GTA 6 File Size: Current Information

Rockstar has officially confirmed the release date and pre-load schedule, but its current official information does not give players an exact GTA 6 storage requirement.

Final Verdict

The idea that GTA 6 could require around 200 GB of storage is certainly possible, especially considering the scale and ambition of the game. However, players should not treat 200 GB as the official GTA 6 file size. The most accurate information right now is simple: Rockstar Games has not officially announced how many GB GTA 6 will require. The 200 GB number comes from an unofficial claim that has circulated online, not from Rockstar Games itself. Until Rockstar publishes the actual storage requirement, any exact number should be considered unconfirmed.

For players preparing for GTA 6, the safest approach is to keep a substantial amount of free storage available and wait for the official requirement to appear closer to launch.

GTA 6 is scheduled to release on November 19, 2026, and digital pre-loading is scheduled to begin on November 12. Once the official download information becomes available, we should finally have a reliable answer to the GTA 6 file-size question.
